Minority-Owned Business in Montgomery County
Last year I had the privilege of serving as a member of the Minority Owned and Local Small Business Task Force to review and provide recommendations for the reform of Montgomery County, Maryland’s procurement laws. Among our tasks was to ensure a fair, open and accessible procurement process. A recent study of the County’s procurement process concluded that discrimination, particularly for African Americans, was a persistent problem.
Over the course of nine months, we studied existing procurement policies, met with program Directors, and engaged the various stakeholders to determine best practices. We came up with 24 discrete recommendations designed to remedy past discrimination, improve access to contracting opportunities and much needed capital, and provide a fertile business environment in which all companies can flourish. A copy of the Task Force’s Report and recommendations can be found here.
